Dogon Music Worldwide: Working Together
Background
Dogon Music Worldwide was founded in 1998 when myself, Cheick-Hamadou Traore, and a group of friends were very active in the music and student radio scene of Oxford.
We were organising live events and African/world music nights at the Ponana, the Zodiac, the Cowley Community Centre and also at the Port Meadow Festival.
The inspiration for Dogon Music Worldwide came from the Dogon people of Mali for who music is a communal activity and as such part of the 'glue' that makes culture and individual life meaningful.
Since then, our main objective has been to further this vision of music being a mediator, communicator and peacemaker, and to share it with artists, musicians, promoters and the wider community in the UK and abroad.
I thank all the people who helped make it happen: Hugo Makepeace, Josh, Moses, Andrew, Reka, Djigui, Nick …
